What good is my MFA?

"MFA" done with The Graffiti Creator

Warning! I'm going to whine a little!

I'm going to start re-working my Thesis today. I don't have much enthusiasm left for finishing my degree. It seems that I just miss the end of everything that is good. When I was getting my BA, a BA still meant something, still opened doors to good careers, but by the time I completed it, 1999, companies were looking for people with Masters.

Now that I'm about finished with my MFA, companies, for profit schools, and universities, are all looking for PhDs, or a more specific degree, or more experience than I have.

What did I expect to do with an MFA in Writing?

  • Teach at a Community School
  • Teach at a For Profit School
  • Run a writing center in a High School or Middle School
  • Copy Edit

  • Marketing

Perhaps my view of what I want to do is too narrow. Does anyone have any good ideas that I should pursue ABT (all but Thesis) to gain experience?

PS. The dream is to publish short stories and novels.
